MIS Celebrates Nutrition Month and Joins the National Health Campaign

Difficulty of Breathing, Difficulty of Life

They moved from one place to another when he was young by reason of the constant changes of his mother’s work assignment. This time around it was at a remote place and during those one of the most challenging moments of his life. His was a labored breathing given his medical condition known as Asthma to the Science World.  More than that was the difficulty of breathing a financially and materially stable type of family. Every kid of his age would have dreamed of toys and of longer playtime. But his was marked with early maturity and sense of responsibility.

Be Healthy, Be Wealthy
The Benefit of Exercising is Truly Remarkable

The last week of July was a healthy week for Maharlika International School as they celebrated the Annual Health Month with the theme “Health Management: Through Proper Nutrition and Exercise.” There were a lot of activities catering to different grade levels such as the coloring contest for Preparatory Pupils until Primary Level. The Intermediate and Elementary Levels see action in Poster-Slogan Making Contest while the Junior High School students cheered the crowd with their own Nutri-Jingles. Aside from those art-related activities, students also have health-related ones including competitions on Fruit Plating, Balanced Meal Preparation, Nutritious Food Baking, and Healthy Fried Rice Making.

Miss Nonabel Cawed, the Activity Coordinator remarked that may everyone realize the importance of being healthy because indeed our health is our wealth.

Immunity to Life’s Challenges

His asthma attacked again and this time around it was so severe that his mother thought that he would die. They rushed him to a nearby hospital and through the Goodness of the Almighty he was saved from imminent danger. Maybe it was not yet his time. It wasn’t.

Every Child's Nighmare- Immunization
July 13 to August 1, 2015 marked the National Campaign for Immunization for the whole country as presented by the Government of Timor-Leste in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education among other local concerned offices. International organizations such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, Measles and Rubella Initiative lend a helping hand in the realization of this event. This program aimed to eradicate Measles, Rubella and Polio in Timor-Leste.

It is for this reason that Miss Genoveva Baptista and Mr. Amancio Ximenes Guteres who are nurses from the Ministry of Health visited Maharlika International School on the 23rd of July 2015 to administer immunization and to give oral medicine to pupils and students as well as other children who haven’t received such health benefit. They were assisted by the school’s Director for Academic Programs Mr. Charles Michael B. Papay and the school’s Director for Administration Mrs. Rosemarie Papay Medrano. Some parents were also around during this immunization event. Mrs. Weliana Tanuwidjaja, a mother of two Maharlikan learners congratulated the Government for spearheading this program which she thinks is beneficial for all the children who received it. She added also her appreciation to the school’s effort in extending to their students programs such as this.

An Apple a Day

Sometimes his asthma still attacks him and it weakens him physically that he admonishes his household to stay healthy as much as possible through healthy diet and positive lifestyle. Oh by the way, that boy in our opening story grew up and became a man who fought hard to earn his place on this Earth. He grew up fighting all his “asthmas” in life and became the Executive Director of Maharlika International School.
